1st Choice Driving School INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

Thank you for expressing an interest in training to qualify as an approved driving instructor.  The information provided below, outlines the requirements, exams and training in order to obtain the qualification; ADI (Approved Driving Instructor). The examinations are set and conducted by the DVA(Driving & Vehicle Agency).

Teaching people to drive can be a very rewarding task, with great job satisfaction.  Many people enter the training with an idea that because they enjoy driving, they will therefore enjoy teaching people to drive.  The job really does not involve much driving from you, teaching is the main criteria of the occupation.  The criteria for being a successful instructor, is having the ability to teach, understanding how people learn, the ability to assess the performance of others and having exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.  The occupation is a flexible one, enabling you to arrange your teaching around your own home and social life.

REQUIREMENTS

Firstly you must ensure that you have had a full UK or EU Licence for the last four years.  You have not been disqualified from driving.  You have not had any convictions of any kind in the last ten years.  A clean licence is preferable but it is not essential, but any more than 3 points on your licence may cause you problems being accepted onto the ADI register.  Minor motoring offences are irrelevant in your application to the register.

EXAMINATIONS

The examinations required in order to qualify as an ADI are in three parts; a computer based theory test, a practical test of your driving ability and a practical test of your ability to instruct.

Part one

The exam consists of a theory test which is 100 multiple choice questions followed by a hazard perception test.  The test is conducted at a theory test centre, on a computer with an instant result and outcome.

In order to study the part one exam, a home study pack is provided.  All the questions and materials are supplied in order to study competently enough to sit and pass the exam.  The pass mark for the qualification of the part one exam, is 85%, the exam is divided into 4 separate bands of 25 questions, covering four topics;

With a pass requirement of (80%) 20/25 correct answers in each band.  This ensures you have a comprehensive knowledge in all areas of the required syllabus.

The hazard perception test was introduced to L tests in November 2002, as the government is committed to reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads today, reducing the number of accidents by 40% by 2010.  The hazard perception test is designed to make new drivers aware of the potential hazards as they develop and early recognition of this can reduce the amount of accidents that occur on our roads today.

The pass mark for the Hazard perception test for Instructors is 57/75.

The hazard perception test is undertaken immediately after the multiple choice questions.  You are shown a series of 14 video clips, each with potential hazards developing.  Early recognition of the developing hazard is valuable, gaining maximum 5 points per hazard.

You can apply for and sit the part one exam three times, you then have two years from the date of passing part one, in order to pass subsequent part’s two and three, then obtaining the qualification, DOE ADI.( Department of The Enviroment Approved Driving Instructor) Only once you have passed part one, you are then able to apply for and sit part two, driving ability test, should your driving meet the required standard.

Part two

The driving ability test lasts for one hour.  You have three attempts at the part two exam. This is an advanced driving test and a very high standard of competence is required.  You must show that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and that you can apply them.  You must satisfy the examiner on all or any of the following subjects:

The routes used for the test will include roads which may carry heavy and/or fast moving traffic; they will also cover a range of road and traffic conditions, including urban and rural conditions.

Before driving you are required to pass the eyesight test. For this you must be able to read in good daylight with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if worn, a motor vehicle registration mark containing letters and figures:

or

If you do not pass the eyesight test, you will not be allowed to take the driving ability element.  The test will be marked as a fail and will count towards your three attempts.

As from the 10th August 2005 your examiner will ask you to describe how to perform a check on the condition and safety of three components of the vehicle and demonstrate an actual check on the condition of a further two components.

The components will be chosen from the following list: tyres, steering, brakes, lights, reflectors, direction indicators, audible warning device and the liquids used in the braking system, steering system, engine or elsewhere in the vehicle as a coolant, lubricant, cleaner or otherwise.

It is your responsibility to provide a car which is properly taxed and insured.  It must be a saloon car or hatchback/estate car in good working condition and with seat belts in working order.  It must be capable of the normal performance of vehicles of its type with a manual transmission, right-hand steering, a readily adjustable seat with a head restraint for a forward facing front passenger, and an adjustable interior rear view mirror for use by the examiner. The car must not display L plates.

If your vehicle does not meet the above requirements, it will not be possible to carry out the test.

You must show the ability to perform any or all of the following manoeuvres including all three of the reversing exercises:

or

The total number of minor errors allowed in order to pass the part two exam is 6.  Any more than 6 minor marks or any major or serious marks, will result in faliure and count towards your three attempts.

Once you have passed part two, you can then apply for your third and final part three exam, you can apply for a trainee licence before sitting part three, enabling you to gain teaching experience.   If you fail the part two exam on all three attempts, you have to wait until your two years has expired from the date of passing part one, in order to re start your training and exams, starting with part one again.

Part three

Part three exam is testing your ability to give instruction.  The exam is one hour long and divided into two sections, each individual phase is half an hour.  An examiner will role play the part of a pupil, with you as the instructor.  The first phase the examiner will be playing the role of a novice pupil, one who is new to a particular subject and requires talking through the exercise.  The second phase the examiner will play the part of a partly trained pupil, who is at test standard, who requires question and answering techniques, to obtain their required knowledge of the particular subject.  In the Driving Instructor world, you are required to teach many different standards of pupils each day, from one lesson to another, this ability is a valuable one, that you do not either over or under instruct on an individual lesson.

For each of the two roles the examiner will choose one of the exercises given below as the basis of the instruction:

The instruction you should give, should be tailored to the time available and to the standard of the ‘pupil’ being role-played by the examiner.  You will probably find it helpful to establish the depth of the ‘pupil’s’ knowledge in each phase, by asking questions and observing the ‘pupil’s’ performance as you would with a real pupil you had not taught before.

How will I be assessed?

In assessing your performance, the examiner will take into account:

You will be expected to maintain control of the lesson, be patient and tactful and give encouragement to the ‘pupil’ at all times.  What is assessed is the relevance of the instruction for the ability of the pupil and to the particular conditions on the road on the day of the test.

TRAINEE LICENCE

Once you have passed the first two parts of the ADI qualification process, you can apply for a trainee licence to help you gain experience instructing pupils to drive.

A trainee licence allows you to be legally paid for giving driving instruction, but should not be regarded as a sole means of making a living or as an alternative to registration as an ADI.

It is issued only for you to gain practical experience in preparation for the part three instructional ability test and is useful for those in the final stages of .

The trainee licence lasts six months each and no more than two are available, It is not essential to have one, but it is an option that is available to assist in preparing trainee’s for the part three examination.

Applying for a trainee licence

If you apply for a trainee licence you must:

The application form for trainee licences can be obtained from the examiner who passes you on your part two driving ability test.

Conditions

The conditions under which a licence is granted are:
